The first offline international academic lecture titled "Therapists' Own Schemas: Preventing Burnout " was held with the presence of faculty members, staffs and students in the hall of Dr. Iraj Siasi on Monday, December 4, 2023.
At the beginning, Dr. Susan Simpson, Director of Schema Therapy Scotland, and Co-director of the Global Institute of Eating Disorders, explained that therapists have their own schemas and history that they bring with themselves to their work. These schemas impact on how they respond to their own colleagues, the clients and the work demands. She also mentioned that according to the literature, although schemas can improve the empathy and care of therapists for their own patients, they can be a vulnerability and risk factor in increasing their chances for burnout.
At the end, Dr. Simpson emphasized that most therapists are caught up in the same pressures and expectations, therefore, encouraging them to take good care of themselves and increase self-compassion will play a crucial role in reducing burnout in the long term and will lead to modeling to the next generation of therapists.
